Where did the summer go? Before you know it it will be time to turn the water off and close the Club for another year. I was thinking the other day that I might not be around for another 31 years to turn the water off in the fall and back on in the spring. A couple of years ago I put together a note book with pictures showing every drain point in the system and a narrative of just what has to be done. If there is anyone out there who would like to make a commitment for the next 31 years and undertake this job? I usually turn the water off November 1 and turn it back on around April 15 depending on weather. Barb and I are going to Hawaii October 17 and will not return until November 5. I think it will be OK until November 5 but it would be nice if someone would be responsible in case the weather should be unusually cold. If so, please respond by email or phone. My email is richk234@verizon.net and my phone is 252-6101.
We finished the year with 15 resignations, 5 leave requests and 12 new members. Our membership stands at 191. Budget wise the optimum number is 200. I was informed last spring that my request to keep new members in mind came across as an urgent request to recruit new members. Every year we have a number of resignations for various reasons and we need to replace those members. If you have friend who may be interested don’t hesitate to ask them to join. We will let you know if the membership gets too high.
We have ordered 20 picnic leg sets for next year and will be retiring the rest of the all-wood tables. We have asked the fabricator to alter the dimension so the distance from the seat to the table will be less and more comfortable. We are also looking at repairing the seawall north of the mole. If you haven’t strayed over that way; there has been considerable undermining and erosion and the wall is leaning precariously toward the lake. The present gabion baskets extend onto our neighbors property and in repairing the wall we will have be within our property boundary. This may impact one of the hoist spaces.
Our communication with the membership is a concern. We try to use email as much as possible to save money but we always wonder how many members get the email messages and how many even read their emails. I am also concerned when I send out invoices. Many members have let me know how they want to receive their mail. If you haven’t said anything to me please let me know your preference. The post cards are mailed to every member so the membership has at least the summer schedule and the notice for the annual meeting. We would appreciate any feedback that you may have.

I enjoyed spending time at the Club this summer and meeting some of our new as well as old (as in not recently joined!) members.
Our Board and various committee members have done a great job taking care of the Club and arranging the many activities for us all to participate in. From the blessing of the boats on opening night with a record number in attendance, to losing power and helping the band members keep their instruments dry to cool jazz and hot days, to gale force winds – we’ve had it all this summer. And we’ve had a new look in our Clubhouse to enjoy it all in.
I think I can speak for the entire Board by saying that OYC is the club it is because of its members. Many of you contribute something in your own way to make it a better place for all of us. It seems like we were just having spring clean up day and its almost time for fall clean up. With that said, I hope you’ll all pitch in, even for a couple of hours to help get ready to close up for the season. None of the jobs are that difficult and several hands make the tasks go quicker and easier. And it’s a great way to get to know some of the other members. As we always say, this club belongs to all of us and Clean Up Day is one way to show your support.
Lastly, I want to thank all of you who were good sports about letting me take your family “mug shot”. I’ve got photos of more than half the family members. If yours hasn’t been done, feel free to email me one. Once I get as many shots as possible, I’ll make them bigger and print them in color. The “reference book” will be left in the Clubhouse for just that purpose.
     Thanks for your help.

  Cleanup Day, October 18th.
  General Membership Meeting,

Thanks to Adele’s organization, Kidz Day was a big success with 35 youth, and 15 parents attending, even though the weather was stormy. I think moving the event to a Saturday, from 3:30 - 5:30PM, worked very well. The “Reptile Mania” led by snake charmer Robert Felt, was a big hit with everyone, followed by the traditional ice cream sundae bar.
On August 9th we had a traditional pasta dinner in honor of Great Race weekend, followed by the Magical Mystery Tour (formerly known as the Remnants) who played Beatles favorites and more. That was another night folks really got their bogey on!
The second brunch on August 17th showcased Joe Whiting & Loren Barringer. Again, the food was excellent and the crowd was very receptive.
Due to an initial misunderstanding, the Bye’s Beer Blast got moved back to its traditional day, the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. Boy, was the weather glorious that weekend, and club members were primed to enjoy it! This was a packed deck event, with more beer than anyone could drink- but they did anyways! Again, the dish to pass was an impressive array of all sorts of delicious goodies. This winning concept is back in full force moving forward.
Post season, on September 20th Kendra will prepare a gourmet dinner from 5:30 – 7:30PM, and members can bring their libation of choice! The cost is $25, menu and sign-up sheets are in the Clubhouse. During dinner, Nicole Hoey will perform to add a bit more atmosphere to the event.
Fall Clean-up is scheduled for October 18th from 9AM – Noonish. We are expecting new picnic tables, so the old ones will be discarded, and other projects will need to be done. Please show support and come out for this. Many hands make light work!
Thanks for a great season everyone, and keep those happy summer memories alive into the fall.

The club is on a carry in carry out basis till next June just as the waterfront is all year
Personal Identification is Important: Don’t expect everyone to know it ‘s your stuff! OYC stickers can be picked up by making arrangements with me. Things you are allowed to keep over winter Boats, trailers, mooring balls, and hoists all need to be ID. Many shore skids, sailboat parts, tubes and some docks are not labeled with owner’s name and OYC, and they need to be magic-markered or better. Also several of the boat trailers have not been registered or inspected in this century!
Hoist owners, anytime after Oct 15th, you should have your boats and docks out of the water. The crane operator works for us only if he has a free day during the week. Clear out any of your past junk or litter behind the hillside gabions before placing docks on them. Many docks need staining so bring them in and get them stained before Oct. 15th Leave your hoist in the up position.
If you are thinking of boating after that date, you may trailer your boat or find a friend with an empty mooring. Any lift owners that are making changes of any type please email me ahead so there will not be any problems or conflicts. There are many members on the waiting list for lift spaces. Early notification would give them time to prepare.
Mooring owners, your winter preparations should include: 1) right off the lake taking your boat to a car wash to pressure wash off the algae; and 2) bringing in your buoy and dropping the chain so the links are not wearing down all year and the ice doesn’t drag the mooring or snap the summer buoy off. To the chain you may attach either line or cable to a spar (winter) buoy or one or two laundry bottles with your name on them and an ID tag on the chain. Leave some slack as it comes in handy when the water level rises in the spring so your bottle is not to far below water level. One bottle can be knotted five feet below the surface and 3/4 s full of water. The surface bottle can be 1/3 to 1/2 full of water so you are not lifting your chain. Many polypropylene lines and cables unknot unless you secure the free line end to the main line with nylon self fastening straps, or wire clamp nuts. The plastic laundry detergent containers are the most flexible and the strongest to use.
Winter Boat storage at the club is first come first serve on the basketball lot otherwise use the storage lot on the way up the hill. Please pull trailers in tight. Be sure your insurance is paid up in case of winter damage.
If you have boats, lifts, and other nautical items for sale, put your notice in the display case at the club. Do this by lifting the front Plexiglas back toward you. Be sure to bring up tacks. Members enjoying fall picnics or walks around the club will stop and look.
A million thanks to the many, many water goers who helped out with all the waterfront projects and upkeep this summer. Lend a hand call me 253-2935

Here comes the old timeworn line..... I hope you had a great summer up here at the lake. But this time, I mean it. Thank you to all the people who have contributed their time and effort to make sure the club is a great place to spend your time. Special thanks to Joan Macholl for continuing to do a great job as our steward.
But..... You know how when your kids have a great time playing, and don't want to stop? Well we have the same problem. The time is coming near to stop playing, and put our toys away. Our toys are boats, sails, skis, tubes, coolers, ect. The club toys need to be put away also. This is where I cleverly introduce the Annual Fall Clean-up Day. This year, the date is October 18th, with the 19th. as the rain date. I would encourage everyone to put this on your calendar, and here comes another well used phrase....... Many hands make light work. Believe it or not, but the clean-up day is a fun experience. Make sure you are not left out of the fun!
We are in our carry in / carry out portion of the season, so would you kindly adhere to our late season policy. Thank you.
Also, I have a few after season projects that I want to take on, probably after clean-up day. If anyone is interested, and willing to help me, please call me @ 255-3662.
Remember, The Owasco Yacht Club's greateat asset is our members.

The 15th of September was a gorgeous day and the Club was as busy as many weekend days during the summer. On the 16th after the nighttime wind storm the water temperature was 64 degrees at the end of the dock so I think only the very hardiest of us (and I don’t count myself as one) will be going into the water on purpose. I may have seen the last of my swimming days for this season and so I mope around.
I need to thank the lifeguards for keeping us all safe in the water this season: Preston Chaffee, Sean McNamara, Tiffany Kline, Mallorie Dygert, Kelsey Roe, and Marissa Rescott. Chelsea Leone made a few weekend return appearances that really helped us out in July, and Justin Sawran picked up the slack for us at the end of the season when other commitments took our other guards away. I’m hoping they’ll all want to come back to us next year. In the meantime, Thanks, and good luck to you this school year.
I need also to thank Don Devine for varnishing the new lifeguard chair. It was off the dock for less than an hour when Don saw it in the barn and got to work. Can we clone that guy?
Clean-Up Day is scheduled for Saturday October 18th this year. We need people to put away tables and chairs inside and outside and clean grills and stow the garbage cans and empty flowerpots and so on. If you haven’t made it to these last few, it’s your turn. Come join us!
See you at Clean-Up!

Sailing is not over yet but the sunset is fast approaching. We are still sailing on Sundays but have switched to 1:00 to accommodate schedules. Whether we are just fun sailing or racing it’s a great time of year to be on the water. Hope to see everyone there, it won’t be much longer now. It’s hard to believe it’s the end of Sept. already. We had lots of wind this year, just not on sailing days. We had to extend the weekends for both of our annual regattas but we did get them in with light air. Turnout was also slightly lighter than we would hope. There are a few more sailboats on the roles this year that we would love to see out there with us. There’s a lot of experience in the few sailors we have and they are always willing to share it. It was good to a Laser or two join us again after a long absence. I’m still trying to get that stained glass Laser trophy back in circulation.
See you at the annual meeting.

Kendra and Doug Hart have notified us that they will not be returning next season.
We thank them for their time and talents in contributing to an important part of our club functions and offer
our warm regards for the future. The Board is in the process of recruiting new Kitchen Management. You will
be kept informed.
We appreciated your suggestions and ideas this past season and were able to implement some of them.
