Purser’s Office

By Rich Knaul

Treasurer

This has been a very busy summer with the wedding of our daughter Kate on August 11 in Greencastle, Indiana. ( Greencastle is surrounded by lots of corn and soy beans in the middle of nowhere and a long way from any water like Owasco Lake.)
The stats for this year were 9 resignations including one member dropped after repeated attempts to make contact. There were 13 new members putting our membership at 195. We would like to keep our membership around the 200 level. Please keep the new members coming since we loose about 10 members each year.
Our capital improvement projects for this year are more driveway work and some work in the kitchen to improve things there and comply with health department requirements. We have also purchased some new grills for the picnic areas.
Our annual meeting will again be in November so that the “snow birds” can attend. The meeting will be in a different place this year – the Knights of Columbus - just off Genesee Street on Market Street. You will receive an official notice in the near future. Every year it is very difficult trying to find members willing to devote a little time towards the management of the Club. Please contact Adele Keegan, Peter Whiting or any of the Board members if you are willing to help.
There is still some inventory in the clothing department. If you need a birthday present, Christmas gift, or just a reminder of the Owasco Yacht Club please contact Val McKenzie and I am sure she would be glad to supply you with a sweatshirt, polo shirt or whatever. I have a supply of burgees if you would like one. Sizes are 10 inches x 15 inches, 14 x 21, and 20 x 30. Prices are $14.50, $16.50 and $20.50 respectively.
Last year I asked members not to round their payments and my request must have hit home. Last year there were 18 rounders, this year only 8. Thanks.
Any questions about your bill please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thanks for another great summer and until we meet again at the Club in the spring have a great fall, winter and spring.
For anyone who did not get my email change notice I am now at richk234 @ verizon.net .

Secretary’s Office

By Lousie Wilson

Secretary

As club secretary, it’s been my pleasure to be the first to welcome new members to OYC. Officially, one of my duties is to provide members with information and assistance sponsoring potential new members. The club website has specific details on what the process is, but don’t hesitate to contact me if there are any questions.
Unofficially, I’ve been photographing various activities at the club. You know, that person who’s been in your face (though trying not to be obnoxious) with the camera at every event I’ve attended this season. I know other people have taken photos too. If you taken any special “Kodak moments” and would like to share them, please forward them to me. Not sure what I’ll do with them yet, but I volunteer to be the unofficial club memory keeper.
One of the other official parts of my job is to assist the Commodore at the annual membership meeting held in November. This is your club, and you have a vote in how it’s run. We’re trying for a more fun meeting this year and will hold it at the Knights of Columbus in Auburn. They have a cash bar that will be available, allowing us to mix a little pleasure with business. We really hope you’ll attend. If you do, please introduce yourself, it’s always great to put faces to the mail and email and names I type in the yearbook.

Lakeside Activities

By Kris Belz and Joanie Machol

Social Director

Remembering our Summer on the Social Side:

Memories…The OYC had a jump start on the summer with The John Reilly Band opening for us, and then with Joe Whiting performing at a brunch in June. We had three brunches all together, which are a favorite to many with great food, relaxing music and awesome sights of our sailors on the lake. Does it get any better than this? We don’t think so! Alibi, new to the OYC, was a big hit and we received several requests to book them again for next year. Another band that was a lot of fun was The Remnants, a Beatles Tribute Band, with great vocals and personalities that made for a memorable night. August started out with Chris Farrar and went out with a bang with another new to the OYC band, The Rounders. This energetic band had some members dancing on the tables (yes…the tables!) In addition to these great bands we had a wine tasting during the summer and one in the end of September.
As Labor Day weekend was approaching, telling us that summer was soon to end, members begin to feel sad…it’s good to know that we have Jim Bye to lift our spirits at the Beer Tasting. And lift our spirits he did with 30+ different kinds of beer, warm weather, good snacks and friends. What a great way to end the season.
We hope you were able to enjoy the social side at the club. Let us know your thoughts and ideas. We are already talking about the plans for next summer and would love to have your input.

Your Social Committee

Kris and Joanie

OYC Boatlift Wait List

Click Here to See the Boat Lift Wait List

The sunny summer of 2007 is over! Since the lake level has dropped, the launch ramp may not be deep enough to allow larger boats out at OYC. So think of using the Emerson Park ramp. The south and swim docks will not be taken out by club members. The club now hires these done. Part of the south (ramp) dock stays in until the end of Oct. if there is declared interest by boaters or fishermen who would be responsible for taking the rest out. Please send an email to Don Devine or me.
Personal Identification: The OYC stickers can be picked up by making arrangements with me. Boats, trailers, mooring balls, dock parts and hoists all need to be ID. Many shore skids and sailboat storage parts are not labeled with owner’s name and OYC, they need to be. Several trailers have not been registered or inspected in this century!
Lift owners should get boats and docks out of the lift area as soon as possible because the hoists get pulled when the crane operator has a free day during the week any time after Oct. 15th. Clear out any of your past junk behind the gabions on the hillside before placing docks on them. Many docks need staining so bring them in ad get them stained before Oct. 15th Leave your hoist in the up position
If you are thinking of boating after that date, you may trailer your boat or find a friend with an empty mooring. Any lift owners that are making changes of any type please email me ahead so there will not be any problems or conflicts. There are many members on the waiting list for lift spaces. Early notification would give them time to prepare.
Mooring owners, your winter preparations should include: 1) taking your boat to a car wash to pressure wash off the algae; and 2) bringing in your buoy and dropping the chain so the links are not wearing down all year and the ice doesn’t drag the mooring or snap the summer buoy off. To the chain you may attach either line or cable to a spar buoy or two Clorox bottles with your name on them and an ID tag on the chain. Leave some slack as it comes in handy when the water level rises in the spring so your bottle is not below water level. One bottle can be knotted five feet below the surface and 3/4 s full of water. The surface bottle can be 1/3 to ½ full of water so you are not lifting your chain. Many polypropylene lines and cables unknot unless you secure the free line end to the main line with nylon self fastening straps, or wire clamp nuts. The plastic laundry detergent containers are the most flexible and the strongest to use.
Winter Boat storage at the club is first come first serve on the basketball lot. Please pull in tight. Be sure your insurance is paid up in case of winter damage.
If you have boats, lifts, and other nautical items for sale, put your notice in the display case at the club. Do this by lifting the front back toward you and up – bring tacks. Members enjoying fall picnics or walks around the club will stop and look.
A million thanks to the many, many water goers who helped out with all the waterfront projects and upkeep this summer.

Any suggestions you have to make the waterfront better call Ralph Estrich at 253-2935 or email at

Grounds

By Tom Graber

Grounds Director

As usual, I hope everyone got as much out of the summer months as you could. The season is just too short (but you tell everyone you love the change of seasons). I personally, had a very hectic summer that kept me away from the lake more than I wanted, but oh well!
Again, Joan Macholl did a great job keeping the place in "ship shape". Thank you. But now with the passing of Labor Day, comes the carry in - carry out part of our season. Thanks for your help in this effort.
Speaking of thanks, Thanks in advance for helping with this year’s annual fall clean-up. The date is October 20th, with a rain date of October 21st. As you know, we now have our docks taken out "professionally", not that when we did it ourselves, we didn’t do a first rate job. But what this does do, Is free us up to do other tasks. I am hoping that we can take on a few labor intensive tasks that we just don’t have the ability to do during the regular season. Clean-up day is one of if not the best event on our calendar because 1) It is a great social event. 2) Plenty of fresh air, and 3) It’s good exercise.
I am looking forward to squeaking in a few more days on the lake before then. Hope to see you there. Enjoy...

Inside The Buoys

By Janie Darovskikh and Ellen Cotter

Swimming Directors

What have we done to keep deserving all these beautiful-weather days? The water is still hovering around 70_, and it looks as though the wind has been cooperating for sailing, too. It may be officially fall, but the unofficial summer season lives on.
I would like to take some space to recognize our lifeguards: Chelsea Leone, Preston Chaffee, Reagan Cuddy, and Matt Valvo. Thanks for keeping us safe in the water this summer and performing some of the more strenuous and icky jobs to keep the swimming area pleasant and fun (cutting seaweed, putting in/pulling out the trampoline raft, cleaning the diving raft, removing dead fish, to name a few). Thanks also to Gary Leader and Ryan Cuddy for taking up the slack when our older guards returned to college at the end of the season. And a special thanks to Luke Chapin for working tirelessly on concrete-block-and-stone steps at the bottom of the swim stairs off the dock when the water got especially low. Our senior members especially appreciated the effort.
Yet again the water quality test done by the county Department of Environmental Health this summer indicated we are blessed with the best quality we could possibly have. If only we could eradicate those zebra mussels…
As always, if you have any ideas for the swim area next season, send me an email (smellencotter @ yahoo.com).

Hope to see you all at Clean-Up Day!

Sailing

Jim Kusche

Sailing Directors

It’s been a great season for sailing , some of the best wind I can remember and on the right days.
The Labor Day Regatta is history for this year again. We had good wind for the long distance race and there is no doubt Brad and Weez had grins ear to ear. Peter won overall with the best performance round-the-buoys the first day.
It was good to see a few of the student sailors out. I think this was the most active class Tony has ever graduated. Once again, Thank you Tony.
For those interested we are still sailing, although the weather will be the issue shortly.

See you all at the annual meeting for trophy presentations.

The Galley & Ship’s Store

By Valerie McKenzie

Kitchen Director

Galley

We have had a wonderful, New York summer. I can’t remember so many clear and beautiful days. I am sure everyone has enjoyed the club and our Galley services. Our dinners and brunches gave us a lovely choice of food and especially desserts. The snack bar services were always prompt and filling.

We are looking for your ideas for the 2008 season. Our attendance at various functions this season was lower than in previous years. We are looking for your input into the type of meals and selections at the snack bar that would best meet your needs. We are hoping to improve the food service and keep food service available to the membership.

Please email or call with any ideas, improvements, food thoughts you might have to help us.

Please email us if you have any suggestions, or ideas you would like us to consider.

Ships Store

The Ship’s Store was in business again this year. We sold many tees and polos. We still have totes, hats and various shirts and sweatshirts available for Christmas presents and birthday gifts.

If there is anything special you would like to carry the club logo please call me. See you next summer.

Home Port

By Al Kalicki

Buildings Director

Picture not yet available       I am slowly getting acclimated to the job of "Buildings" director. Substantial progress was made on many small and some larger improvement projects. The club's buildings as a whole are in good shape.

One thing became apparent to me. I must learn to depend more on volunteer help, as some of the projects were close to being beyond "one man" jobs.

Have a good Fall, Winter and Spring!! See you next season, and if you are able to assist me with some projects , please let me know!!!
