WINDWARD
| Volume 79, Issue 4 | Internet Edition | October 2005 |
Hi folks,
No one can complain about this summer.....a sailors, swimmers, sunbathers and siesta takers delight!!! It's been a pleasure working with our Board of Directors. They are all hard working creative and available to accomplish the many tasks that keep this Club running smoothly.
One of our biggest tasks was trying to get our property assessment lowered. As of this writing(9/23),nothing is definite, but it looks as if we have come up with a win/win compromise for OYC and the Owasco Town Board. Please come to the ANNUAL MEETING on MONDAY,NOVEMBER 14th,7PM at WILLARD CHAPEL for details.
This Fall, new carpet will be installed in our Club House,as we just couldn't get the old one clean anymore. It served us well,as we have had it for many, many years. We are getting estimates for new windows and doors for the Club House. I don't know if we can pull this off financially for next season, but certainly in the near future.
Right now members are pounding nails on the deck to countersink them so that the deck can be sanded and refinished this Fall. We plan to apply the protective finish on CLEAN-UP DAY,SATURDAY,OCTOBER15th,weather permitting. If you are up to the Club, pound some nails...tools are there and being at the Club is beautiful this time of year. If you can help Tom Graber out with refinishing the deck give him a shout out.
Thanks to all of you who pick up after yourselves at events and other times(wine bottles, beer bottles etc.) This NEEDS to be done by ALL as we don't have maid service and it's the right thing to do.
Any suggestions for our next season,or if you would like to serve on the Board please let me know. It's been a pleasure serving you and I'd like to be considered again. We will vote for Board members at the annual meeting on November 15th. See you at the Club before that I hope.
As ever, Adele

Well, we survived another season and what a season it was. I never remember seeing people in swimming the last week of September. We sure got our money’s worth this year. Just because it may be cold out does not mean that the Club is off limits to the members. You may have to park up on the road and walk down but the Club is nice to visit in the winter also. Make sure you are fit for the walk back up, especially if the snow is deep. Just a safety note, if you don’t have a cell phone, the pay phone is left on all year so should you get stuck down there in the winter you can call out. Remember, there are no bathroom facilities open after November 1. If you do make the trip down and you notice anything that should not be, please let one of the Board members know.
There may still be some adjustments for those who had or did not have boats stored at the Club this summer. Ralph (Estrich) and I will be going over the list very soon to see if we have missed anyone.
Hopefully by the time this newsletter goes to press (or on line) Adele will have some news about our assessment grievance.
We are updating our long-range plan and looking at some capital projects for the future. A few of which are: new doors, new windows and screens, stainless steel counter and sinks for the kitchen, upgrade dishwasher, road repairs, new lighting and ventilation for club house, and bank improvements above the swimming area. New carpet in the clubhouse is already down.
Don’t forget the annual meeting on November 14 at Willard Chapel at 7 PM. If I don’t see you there, have a cool winter and a Happy New Year. You will be hearing from me along about February 1, 2006. Whew – where did 2005 go? ot Yet Submitted

If you have comments or suggestions please e-mail me and let me know. Plans begin mid winter for next summer so I will need to know your thoughts in a timely manner!!!
Have a great fall and winter and we’ll see you in the spring!

OYC Boatlift Wait List
Click Here to See the Boat Lift Wait List
The sunny summer of 2005 is over! Since the lake level has dropped, the launch ramp may not be deep enough to allow larger boats out at OYC. So think of using the Emerson Park ramp. The north and swim docks will be taken out by volunteer club members on fall clean up Oct. 15th. Part of the south (ramp) dock stays in until the end of Oct. if there is declared interest by boaters or fishermen who would be responsible for taking the rest out. Please send an email to me.
The OYC stickers can be picked up by making arrangements with me. Boats, trailers mooring balls, and hoists all need to be ID. Also many shore skids and sailboat storage parts are not labeled with owner’s name and OYC, they need to be. Several trailers have not been registered or inspected in this century!
Lift owners should get boats and docks out of the lift area as soon as possible because the hoists get pulled when the crane operator has a free Sunday any time after Oct. 15th. If you are thinking of boating after that date, you may trailer your boat or find a friend with an empty mooring. Any lift owners that are making changes of any type please call me ahead so there will not be any problems or conflicts. There are many members on the waiting list for lift spaces. Early notification would give them time to prepare.
Mooring owners, your winter preparations should include: 1) taking your boat to a car wash to pressure wash off the algae; and 2) bringing in your buoy and dropping the chain so the links are not wearing down all year and the ice doesn’t drag the mooring or snap the summer buoy off. To the chain you may attach either line or cable to a spar buoy or two Clorox bottles with your name on them and an ID tag on the chain. Leave some slack as it comes in handy when the water level rises in the spring so your bottle is not below water level. One bottle can be knotted five feet below the surface and 3/4 s full of water. The surface bottle can be 1/3 to ½ full of water so you are not lifting your chain. Many polypropylene lines and cables unknot unless you secure the free line end to the main line with nylon self fastening straps, or wire clamp nuts. Clear plastic bottles are too thin while some others types are too brittle; laundry detergent types are of flexible and strong plastics.
Winter Boat storage at the club is$50.00 first come first serve on the basketball side of the south lot. Please pull in tight, be sure your insurance is paid up in case of damage.
If you leave a kayak, canoe, sunfish, lazer, inner tube, etc you will be billed also.
If you have boats, lifts, and other nautical items for sale, put your notice in the display case at the club. Do this by lifting the front back toward you and up – bring tacks. Members enjoying fall picnics or walks around the club will stop and look.
A million thanks to the many, many water goers who helped out with all the waterfront projects and upkeep this summer. Look for your picture on the website and to down load.
Any suggestions you have to make the waterfront better , please email me at
Any questions or concerns call or email Ralph Estrich at 253-2935 or Questions please call Ralph at 253-2935 or Peter Whiting at 252-2709

Hopefully, everyone was able to take full advantage of a great boating season. With Fall slowly but surely approaching, we must now shift our focus. Please continue to take advantage of the mild evenings, and great sunsets, but keep in mind that we are in “carry in - carry out” mode for the rest of the season. Also, as you take your boat trailer from the upper yard, please return the wood wheel chocks back to the pile by the driveway.
Our focus now shifts from play to work, the highly anticipated fall clean-up on Saturday, Oct 14th (Sunday Oct 15th raindate). Hopefully everyone will be able to participate in one or more of their favorite events (Table and Chair Storage, Dock Removal, and the ever popular Leaf and Brush Removal). We are adding a new event to the line-up this year, Deck Restoration. We are currently in the process of setting all of the deck nails, and will need sanding, cleaning, and re-sealing the deck on clean-up day. Hopefully, this will give the deck new life, and a safer and more appealing appearance for the future.
Hopefully we will see everyone there!!
If you have any ideas, questions or concerns, feel free to call me: Tom Graber 255-3662 or tgraber@adelphia.net

The racing season started in June this year. There were Sunday races and Wednesday evening races from the 1st week of June on. The Club held the Colonel Peet Long Distance race over the 4th of July week-end. The summer racing series then went from July 9 through Labor Day week-end. The weather has been so good in September that a Fall racing season on Sunday mornings was held for three remaining week-ends in this month. There have been one or two catamarans and four or five Flying Scots involved in most of the club races. The level of sailboat racing has steadily improved over the summer with all competitors winning at least one race.
Several Club sailors took part in the 2-day district Flying Scot championship series held on Skaneateles Lake out of the Skaneateles Sailing Club. Club member Peter Whiting and his crew, Jim Bouche, came in first at the district level in this championship series.
It has been a great summer for sailing on our favorite Finger Lake from June through September. Our club and the members all need to continue to work hard to keep the club the wonderful place it is to spend the summer days and evenings.

I think everyone enjoyed the meals and special events that Liz planned for us this year. She was always anxious to try new and exciting ideas with food and decoration. We are hoping to be able to refurbish the sink area of the kitchen for next year. Thank you for your support and interest in all the activities of the club.
We still have many t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and polo shirts available. If you are interested in purchasing any of these things please call for size and color. Thank you for your support this year.
See you at the club.

The summer is over, but the fall is a great time to create some memories at the club. the air is crisp, the leaves will be falling and the view of our lake will be just beautiful.
The buildings have been used alot this summer season by the members, and the club house and toilrt facilities will still be available for your use in october.
Several small improvements have been completed this year and more are in the works for future years. the soiled carpeting in the club house is scheduled to be replaced in october. replacement of windows and doors, improvement to ventilation and refreshing the finish to the ceiling tile are all in the planning stage.
The buildings are for all of our use and enjoyment so let me know what your thoughts are for improvements. let's make them happen. have a great fall.
