From The Helm

By Adele Keegan

Commodore

Summer is going quite well. Thanks for completing everything on our "Honey-Do' list. A special thanks to Rich Knaul and Don Devine for all their pre-opening work. Thanks to Tony St.Phillips for a very successful sailing session and to the Foster family for volunteering to paint the garage this season.

The grounds look fantastic and the Kitchen couldn't get any better. We are so fortunate to have The Macholls and Kendra's Krew.Give them a SHOUT OUT when you see them.

FYI
I know many of you are concerned about the Gronton Waste Treatment Plant and the Fish Plant dumping phosphorous into our lake. You have asked what to do...LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD.E-mail County officials at;

www..co.cayuga.ny.us

or State officials at;

Look in the front of your phone book for phone numbers and addresses of these officials and write or call them.

As ever, Adele

Years ago almost every member who had a boat flew an OYC Burgee on his boat. The Club also flew an OYC Burgee from the nautical flag pole on the deck. In case you do not know what a burgee is take a look at the web site. It is the blue and white pennant that is in the center of the OYC logo. Every yacht club burgee is unique to that club. After many years our supply has dwindled down to just one and its time to order more. Like everything else there are minimum orders and the more you order the lower the price per burgee. If you are interested in having a burgee please let me know by email or phone (or even regular mail). The two sizes that we stocked in the past were 10” x 15”, which was the most popular and the 14” x 21”. Prices for minimum orders are $14.00 and $16.00 respectively. There are other sizes available all the way up to 60” x 90”.

Each year the Board updates our capital budget identifying capital improvements that need to be done around the Club. Some items on the list are driveway work, kitchen up grading, especially the need for a 3 bay sink and shelving, more parking area, and clubhouse ceiling. If you feel there should be other things added to the list please speak up. We will be addressing this subject at our next meeting in August and establishing a priority list.

In the previous newsletter I mentioned the ideas that the Board has kicked around concerning our opening and closing workdays. To date I have had only one family respond. They favored the assessment route. Does anyone else have any thoughts? Thanks to those who helped out around the club after we posted the work list. Your help was certainly appreciated.

Our membership stands at 196 but that includes 4 memberships who have not responded to, bills, letters, emails or phone calls. If you should be one of those your membership will be automatically terminated as of August 1. Years ago those names were posted on June 1 but recent boards have shied away from that practice.

The weather has been great, and the food outstanding. If you haven’t sampled either one at the CLUB this summer you had better hurry. There is only one month left before we settle back into the school year routine. See you at the OYC.

Happy Birthday to the OYC. The club is turning 80 this year and we will be celebrating with a birthday party on August 12th. Kendra will be preparing an awesome buffet, which will be served from 5-7. Following dinner, the John Reilly Band will be performing. On August 17th you can treat yourself to an evening of hors d’oeuvres and wine tasting starting at 6:00. Our final brunch will be held on August 20 with Joe Whiting and Loren Berringer providing entertainment. We will close out August with a clambake on the 26th. “Swingtime” featuring our very own Blaine Moody, will be providing the evenings entertainment. All buffets require reservations 24 hours in advance, this may be done by calling the kitchen, 252-7850, and leaving a message on the machine or signing up in the clubhouse. Be sure to include your name and number of people in your dinner party. The last day to use chits will be August 23rd.

Of course we have a few events scheduled for Labor Day weekend. All weekend long a jukebox will be available for your use. On September 3rd Jim Bye will hold the annual “Bye’s Beer Blast” and we will end the evening with a Going…Going…Gone buffet.

One more event, Clean-Up Day, will be held with a date TBA.

Any comments or requests about club events? Please e-mail us. You can find our e-mail addresses on the clubs web site, www.owascoyachtclub.com!

New boat news: The kayak racks have been moved toward the swim area. An aluminum canoe has been donated for club member use. It is on the new canoe rack by the South dock, marked with the OYC sticker. Thank you for the generous contribution. The South dock has a gangplank over the covert for this summer. A more permanent one is in the works.

Please use the sign out book for recreational club boat use. Please use the sign out book (across from kitchen window) and then report to the lifeguards before you leave and when you get back.

Inside The Buoys

By Janie Darovskikh and Ellen Cotter

Swimming Directors

Come On In! The Water’s Great!

The season is well underway, and we have had a fabulous beginning! The water is now at 74°, the seaweed’s been cut at least twice (thanks to Dan Keegan, Matt Sloan, Jack Wessel, and others), the diving board’s been broken and repaired (thanks to Matt—just the repaired part), and the trampoline raft has been reanchored and moved (thanks to Preston Chaffee and Dan). If you haven’t yet had the experience of listening to live music from the raft on a Saturday night or a Sunday afternoon, you simply must before the season ends.

We closed the swimming area temporarily for the first time ever, I understand from the long-time members, on Friday the 14th of July after the four-inch rain event of the 12th. We had instructions from the County Dept. of Environmental Health to close if the water was too murky to see the bottom at the four feet depth as a safety precaution. A water test conducted on the following Monday showed, once again, that our spot on the lake is pristine; the results were at the high end of the “excellent” range.

As a reminder, and in order to avoid plastering our swimming area with signs, please be sure to inform guests of the need for water shoes if they’re planning on standing anywhere in the water. The zebra mussels are still there and apparently always will be. There also is no diving allowed from the dock or the trampoline raft. The water is too shallow for safe diving. Parents of small children should be attentive to their whereabouts while at the Club, and it is a Club policy that parents must accompany their child to the swimming area until the child is a competent swimmer, which is determined by the raft test.

When I sit in the picnic area, even as I am attached to my laptop, and watch young and old playing around in the swimming area until the sun goes down, and I listen to the seagulls and the waves lapping at the shoreline, I appreciate what a heavenly place on earth this is. I know that each member has their own moments like those, and I urge you to cherish each one.

One more thing: Anyone who can find Chelsea Leone’s sunglasses at the bottom of the lake near the raft will be rewarded with a smoothie made by the wonderful people in Kendra’s kitchen. See Preston Chaffee for your reward.

Ellen

Sailing

Jim Kusche

Sailing Directors

It’s hard to believe it’s mid-season already but hopefully the warm weather will continue and bring a little more wind. Tony St Phillips again has done an outstanding job of running the sailing lessons. He borrowed boats from Wells College, trailers them back and forth, and conducted lessons mornings and afternoons. I hope to see some of you young (and young at heart) sailors on the water. Thanks also to Marty and Nancy Fefer and all the members who loaned their Lasers and assisted Tony. It was greatly appreciated.

The July 4th Col. Peet Trophy Race format was similar to last year with a one day long distance race on Sunday and round-the-buoys races on Tuesday. Results are on the sailing web page along with the Summer Series and Weds night results. We still need some “cruising” boats. The Weds. Night series is a great place for the newer sailors to start out either on a Hobie 14 or one of the Sunfish. Winds are generally light and a fun atmosphere with lots of help and encouragement. Anyone interested in sailing should join us for a ride, to crew on race night, or for a few minutes instruction to get you started. An email, phone call, or tap on any sailors’ shoulder is all that’s needed.

One of the Hobie 14s will be outfitted with a new trampoline, and all rigging to keep it in good sailing shape.

We are planning a windsurfing clinic for Sat Aug 5th. Tom Lepak, a long time member from just down the lake has just returned from clinics in California after taking on a new career as an instructor for ABK Sports. He can have you windsurfing by the end of the day. A sailing Drills nite will have been completed (July 26th) by the time you get this, but another one can be scheduled if interest is there. This is good practice in a fun setting. Set aside Sat. Aug 19 for a sail to Cascade for lunch/brunch. An early start for the larger boats is suggested. Russ Kincaid has room for a few passengers on his trimaran while space permits.

Watch the bulletin board for updates.

See you on the water.

The Galley & Ship’s Store

By Valerie McKenzie

Kitchen Director

Galley

Kendra has certainly found a home in our kitchen. She continues to delight us with new and exciting dinners. I am sure everyone joins me in thanking her for all her work and dedication. It is difficult to start a new business and she has made it look easy.

Ships Store

We are anxious awaiting the new shirts and hoodies from our new printer. She has some wonderful new merchandise for us this year. I am hoping by August 1st we will have the first of our clothing. I will have it on display at the club house then.
