WINDWARD
| Volume 79, Issue 3 | Internet Edition | August 2005 |
What a fantastic summer we are having. It's a pleasure to see so many of you enjoying our fabulous Club!!
Thanks to Tony St.Phillips, more of our members have become sailors and
we see our OYC boats being taken out often.Remember to:
The other day when a storm came up we checked the book to see if all were in and safe and noticed no one was signing that they were in. Please heed these safety rules.
An update on assessment: David Tehan ,our attorney, has been working diligently on our petition to reduce our rate. His attempts at a negotiated settlement, unfortunately, has been unsuccessful. The Board will meet with Mr Tehan to decide if it would be in our best interest to furthur litagate.
All Board members have been working long hours to see that our Club is safe and comfortable for you. If you don't know your Board members, check the website, created and maintained by Hobie Romig, for their "mug shots". Give them a thank you "shout out" when you see them. All their work is totally on a volunteer basis.
A reminder that NO personal watercraft is allowed at OYC. That means jet skis.WE have had some none member visitors coming to see OYC friends.
Also, GUEST POLICY remains:that members may only bring local guests twice a month, however, the same local guests, regardless of the hosts.are limited to two visits per season. Local guests include all relatives,as well as friends, within a 50 mile radius of the Club. Guests for Ladies Day or special events are not counted as a guest visit. For other exceptions check your Club Yearbook.
Please do not store your gear in locker rooms or Club grounds. Gear, meaning tubes, chairs and the like. This is Board policy.
Wow!!! This message sounds very preachy....sorry for that but that's my job!
Tom Graber is going to need 6 volunteers during Fall Clean-up to put in a walkway between the Club House and the North Parking lot. Please e-mail him if you can be available. tgraber@adelphia.net
Thanks for all of your support and kindnesses.....especially for your tribute to my daughter on July 3rd
Any suggestions for Club improvement always welcome.
See you around the Club.
As ever, Adele

Membership has pretty much settled out for this year. We have had 23 resignations including 2 junior unattached memberships, and we have added 9 new memberships to our list. They are: Larry and Linda Vicks, Bob and Alice Hoatland; Buck & Joan Jones; Jeff Mead & Charisse Fedigan and children Danielle, Erica, Mckenzie and Emily; Dan and Mary Reilley and children Richard, Abby, Justin, Taylor, Miranda and Kurt; Mike McNeill; Tim and Laureen Lally; David and Lisa Carr and children Jamie and Nick; and Simon and Debbie Moody and children Mykala and Gavin. This sets our 2005 membership at 195 memberships. Over the past few years we have had 2 or 3 new members join after August 1 so if you still have a friend or two who wishes to join let Theresa Mason know who they are. There are some financial breaks in joining after August 1.
We are still at a stand still with our assessment. We applied for a reduction in our assessment again this year based on our appraisal. It was denied by the assessment review board. However our legal action with the Town is still pending from last year and the Board is currently gathering information before we take the next step. Our current assessment is $868,000 and the appraisal we have is for $590,000. Our main contention is that we have been assessed on the same basis as residential property on the Lake while the Board feels that we should be assessed as a social/recreational organization with waterfront property, with limited ability to generate the funds necessary to sustain the higher assessment. We will keep you posted.
Before Labor Day Ralph Estrich will provide me with an updated list of who has boats at the Club. I will then compare it with what I billed out for this year and make the necessary adjustments. Please keep Ralph and me up to date.

As the muggy dog days and the cooler nights become more common, we recognize that each good swimming day and evening sunset with friends at the Yacht Club become more precious as lazy August plays into busy September. So make a point to visit the “stress free zone.” Get out in the water one way or another – relax but do it safely.
New boat news: The kayak racks are under construction; spots will be assigned. Also a small maroon kayak has been donated for club member use! A float boat has been donated for club maintenance work in the mooring area. A lighter, quicker rowboat has been donated for lifeguard use. Thank you to the 3 members for their generous contributions.
Club boat use other than for mooring boats:
Please use the sign out book (across from kitchen window) and then report to the lifeguards before you leave and when you get back.
Any questions or concerns call or email Ralph Estrich at 253-2935 or Questions please call Ralph at 253-2935 or Peter Whiting at 252-2709

It's been noted that some members have been leaving their trash and belonging behind when they leave for home. In order to keep the dues and assessments as low as possible the members of the Club have always done the majority of the work around the clubhouse and grounds. You are responsible for picking up after yourselves. Put your trash and in the trash cans, bottles and recycleable cans in the designated container, and return all dishes and silverware to the proper place in the clubhouse.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call me: Tom Graber 255-3662 or tgraber@adelphia.net

Greetings from the swimming area.
The water has been the place to be with record breaking temperatures this summer; thank goodness for our club's wonderful swimming area complete with its different areas including Kiddie floaty area, lap section, "Big Rock", "Bouncy" and "The Raft and Board". All areas are greatly used and it is a joy to watch kids and adults alike migrating from one spot to another in unpredictable patterns not unlike the zig zags of our local cabbage butterflies.
The water is very clear, perhaps due to our local zebra mussel population? We would like to ask some of you long time OYC members about what you remeber 20 30 years ago compared to today regarding water clarity and zebra mussels...
There was great excitement two weeks ago when a group of OYC members spotted what they thought was Owasco Nessie, but it turned out to be several sailing students and their sunfish in a never seen before combination move called the death spiral twisty combined with the inverted bow plumet, a really amazing move not likely to be seen again in the near future with out having to pay large sums of money..
The "sleepless sleepover" was a great success, thank you to all the lifeguards, kids and adults who made this event safe and memorable. Also thank you to the lifeguards for helping get the bouncy patched, to Dan for his quadruple triple houdini knot and for getting the bouncy back where it needs to be. Lastly, thank you to those of you who tirelessly attend to the every day details that come up, like sawing the ends off those tubular things the rest of us don't know the name of, we really appreciate you!!!

We are having a wonderful year of good food and good company. Liz has outdone herself in providing new and exciting menus for our various parties. Please check the website for the menus for upcoming parties.
NOTE: The kitchen is closed for window orders during special events! Please do not ask the kitchen staff to make up orders for hots hamburgers or other items while they are working to serve those with reservations for special events. This does not include Friday Night Dinners, but don't expect rapid service. The kitchen staff is serving dinners to those partaking in leisurly dinners so you may have a longer wait than usual.
The kitchen will not be opened any Monday thru August.
We have changed companies for our OYC clothing. The Printery is currently doing a selection of clothing and toles for us. I hope to have them later this month. I am sure the prices will remain the same. The catalogue is in the kitchen for your ordering. There are still Ts, sweats, hats and polos available at the kitchen window. I am looking forward to working with the new company.
See you at the club.
