Lakeside Activities

By Adele Keegan & Kris Belz

Social Director

Ahhh…summer in Central New York, there’s nothing like it!!! Despite the weather we have been having lots of fun at the club. We would like to send out a thank-you to Father Enright for blessing the boats and the lake. This was done inside (of course) due to the weather! Another thank you to Liz for donating ice cream and toppings for Kidz Day (also held inside due to the weather!!)

We have many more great events coming up, such as the Irish Buffet with music by Dalton/Keegan, Wine Tasting and Chicken BBQ just to name a few. Please check your calendar (in your club yearbook or on your monthly postcard) for a complete listing. Please remember to make reservations in the kitchen three days in advance so that enough food is ordered! If you cannot make one of the dinners you are always welcome to come up for the entertainment afterward.

We are still looking for any donations of CD’s to be used in the clubhouse. Put your name on them if you wish and then take them home at the end of summer. It would be great to get a large variety to be used for events that do not include music or for lazy (rainy) days in the clubhouse.

This year’s Waterfront has even more to appeal to those interested in sailing. Thanks to Tony St.Phillip’s skillful reconditioning, the two donated club Sunfish are in beautiful shape and ready for your enjoyment. Now members can chaperone a beginning sailor or even race the buoys with a friend between Martin’s Point and the club’s markers. Tony also has the Oday Daysailor in top shape to cruise the lake with two or three friends. Please plan and ask ahead for help launching or rigging. Don’t forget our two popular catamaran style Hobie 14’s that are ready to pull in the water. Their sails are located in the large long black plastic tubes under them. Again please call ahead if there is a need for assistance. For the youngsters starting out, the five ever-popular white prams located on grassy hill are light, small sailed and fun to sail. Please inform the lifeguard before using any club sailboats.

Parental supervision is required for all youth sailors! All sailors need to watch the weather conditions, as the club is not responsible for the actions and choices of its members. Everyone will always wear a life jacket as the winds shift quickly on any lake. There are sailing lessons going on at Skaneateles CC. . Please report any equipment problems, etc, to the steward or myself: phone, note, or email so Tony can be alerted. A lot of time and money is spent preparing and maintaining the waterfront equipment. A broken oar? See the steward who will get one all ready to go from the garage. Then call me to report it.

The other club boats are the three rowboats and the committee powerboat. The rowboats l ocated by the north and south docks and are for use by those needing to get to their moored boats. They are to be used and returned to their spot for the next person to use. The third rowboat in the swim area is required by law for emergency use only. The committee powerboat is for club maintenance, emergencies, and the racing program. It is not open for members’ use.

Fishing is allowed off the two boating docks when it does not obstruct boaters who have preference over the docks. Poles, tackle boxes, and /or buckets cannot be left on the docks.

Please remember to take pride in our club by:

  • Leaving your picnic site cleaner than you found it.
  • Picking up drifted-in trash to keep the shore line neat
  • Draining rain water regularly out of your shore boats
  • Scrubbing off dirt and debris often from your shore boats

Please contact me for any hoist, mooring, and shore waiting list requests. Questions please call Ralph at 253-2935

    Grounds

    By Gary Mason

    Grounds Director

Who's the new guy in the cottage?

I bet your wondering who the new guy is that's been hanging around the club mowing, trimming, fixing, and even waiting on tables! His name is Daniel DelloStritto, yes he is Liz's son and he has taken over the as the OYC steward.

Around the grounds, there's nothing to report that you probably don't all ready know. We have some nice new picnic tables and upright chairs. A couple projects on the list to be completed is a walkway from the driveway to the clubhouse and a new fencing across from the bath-house.

That's about it. Enjoy the rest of the summer and the beautiful fall on the lake.

    Inside The Buoys

By Janie Darovskikh and Ellen Cotter

    Swimming Directors

Although this summer seemed off to a chilly start, the weather does appear to be warming up as of late. And as the regular swimmers and the children will say, “Come on in! The water’s beautiful!” Please remember to wear water shoes if you’re planning on walking on the lake bottom, even in the shallow section. The zebra mussels are here to stay, and they can give your feet some nasty gashes.

Our intrepid lifeguards this year are headed by Allison Sloan. Chelsea Leone, Dan (with goatee) Galka, Jason Galka, and Cassie Janis are manning their posts throughout the week, from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm during July and from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm weekdays, 11:00 am to 8:00 pm weekends during August. Please remember to thank them when you leave the swimming area for the day. They’re keeping us all safe during our visits. The trampoline raft is always a hit, especially with the younger members. The limit is 4-5 bodies (depending on their size) on the raft at any given time, with only two bouncing at a time. The time limit is at the discretion of the lifeguards, depending on how many might be waiting a turn. We can’t allow flips off the raft, and please remember not to bounce while someone is struggling to pull him/herself on board.

The prohibition against eating in the swimming area has been relaxed in recent seasons, so we’ll all have to continue to tidy up after ourselves (and our little crumbmakers) if we want it to stay this way. We’d rather have the lifeguards watching the swimmers than cleaning up after us. There are new straight-back plastic chairs coming to the Club, for those who find the loungers a bit difficult. Feel free to bring one down to the swim area when you need it. We’re also thankful for the donation of several umbrellas to create some shade at the water’s edge.

If you have any questions about the swimming area policies or have ideas to improve the area, feel free to email one of us (Ellen: smellencotter@yahoo.com; Jane: janie@artfigures.com) or stop to chat at the water’s edge. Enjoy!

Thank you to Ellen and Bob Cotter and Allison for finding the leak in the water trampoline and repairing it; we all really appreciate it!

    A few friendly reminders:

  • Please do not skip or throw stones. We want to avoid injuries to people and damage to boats.
  • Please do not feed the ducks. We do not want to encourage them to hang about the swimming area as they carry the highly unpleasant "duck itch".
  • Fishing off the docks is fine, just remember that incoming and outgoing boats take precedence.
*Have a Great Summer and Enjoy!

    The Galley & Ship’s Store

    By Valerie McKenzie

    Kitchen Director

The kitchen is running full speed with wonderful choices for sailors and kids of all ages. The Big Easy was a huge successful with delicious food and exciting entertainment. Our Sunday Brunch was well attended in spite of the weather. The food was tempting and the entertainment was first class. It was wonderful to see young people showcase their talents. Everyone enjoyed the day. If you want to make plans for the weekends to come go to the OYC website for a full schedule of activities and dinning opportunities. A reminder that chits are good until the Monday before Labor Day.

    Ship’s Store

We have received good reviews for our T’s, hats sweatshirts and hoodies. We have added red and blue hats and sweats to our inventory. You can order any type of shirt; the catalogue is in the kitchen. We have a full selection on hand with Liz in the kitchen.
