From The Helm

By Peter Whiting

Commodore

The Club is officially open for the season this evening. I hope everyone enjoys the buffet and the music of the John Reilly Band. Many of you will notice the improvements in the club house, many thanks to Jesse Kline and her crew. Louise Wilson has also redesigned the handbook. There is alot of useful information regarding rules of the club and current members. They both look great.p

Membership is down slightly this year from previous years. Total memberships is in the mid 180's as compared to nearly 200 for the previous few years. Keeping the membership at the 200 level allows the board to continue capital improvements to your club without creating a financial strain. We have room for your friends and family, please promote the club.

Keep yourself up to date with the yacht club's website, administered by Hobie Romig, and the mailings provided by Jesse Kline. There are many greatevents planned for the summer. There is something for all - music on the deck, meals provided by Kendra, sailing races and lessons, and just kicking back and relaxing.

I hope everyone enjoys their summer at the OYC

Treasurer

New members late last summer were Carmen & Donna Zeolla, Daniel & Elizabeth Evans and children; Bob Haskell has returned after many years away from the Club. New members this year are Jonathan & Kathleen Carnes and children, Jason & Amy Gavras and children and John & Kathy Scollan. We welcome them aboard and hope they have many years enjoyment at the Owasco Yacht Club.

On a less positive note we have had ten resignations and five requests for a leave of absence and there are still two members (as of June 12) who have not responded to repeat requests, to mailings, phone calls or emails. As most of you know dues were due by May 31 but on May 31 there were six members who had not paid anything towards their dues. When we ask for the first half of dues or resignations by March 31 it is for a reason - so the Board can plan and budget accordingly. There are also other activities that your volunteer Board needs to do to be ready for the opening day in June and all we ask is that you help us do our job. The Yearbook or Handbook, as it will be called this year, must be ready to go to press by June 1 and in the past delinquent payers have been included. Beginning next year if dues are not paid by May 31 the names of those members will not be listed in the Handbook.

Our membership stands at 187. The ideal budget number is 200 so continue to recruit new members to the best-kept secret on Owasco Lake.

Remember, the treasurer is responsible for maintaining an accurate membership list, including names, addresses, phone numbers and emails. I can only do that with your help. Please let me know when there have been additions to your family and when a son or daughter has left the nest. Since I very seldom receive word when a child is over 21 and has finished college I usually drop them after their 21st birthday.

At the end of the summer I receive from the waterfront director a list of members who have had boats on shore, a rack, a mooring, or a trailer and I compare that with what I billed in the spring. I have no way of knowing if your boat was there the whole summer or just one day so please keep the waterfront director informed which boat is yours when you placed it and when you removed it.

I am sorry if I sound like a grumpy old man. Have a super, happy and safe summer.

The Desk

Secretary

Have you ever been in a situation where you’ve been around a person several times, know them by sight and have had frequent conversations? There’s just one problem, you don’t know their name and are too embarrassed to ask. Personally, that’s never happened to me ;-)

I have an idea how to help you out though, at least at OYC. Come to the club opening on June 21. When you pick up your new Member Handbook and Chits card, we can take a quick snapshot. Yes, I know, you don’t like to have your picture taken. I feel your pain. But it would be great if we could get quick snapshot of your family members. Maybe we can make up a “reference manual” that can be kept in the clubhouse to avoid embarrassing moments. This is just an idea and it may not come to fruition, but maybe we can give it a try. What do you think – are you game?

Last Windward, I gave the summary of events for the entire season, so this time I thought to share the vision and plan for redecorating OYC. If anyone would like to help or be more involved, please contact me at jessekline31@msn.com or call 253-2693.

Theme & Scheme

Colors: Water, Sand & Wine Theme: Nautical/American

This palette compliments the new chairs and the carpet. The theme is nautical obviously, further incorporated thru accessories.

Wine & Sand: Wine on the bottom 3’ of wall, with sand above & molding in between

More blue: Metal corner supports & support beams around the main doorway & the wooden furniture frames (Whitings will match existing blue since that will remain.)

Paint: Matt paint with a flat finish over cinderblock material

Timing: April - ?

Concessions stand dividers: Paper bottom with a basket weave wall covering and drape fisherman’s nets with shells and sea fish on the top, with star white lights.

Rolling dividers: Downsize since they are dated & block flow of space

Windows: Make denim valances with rope accents hung with existing hanging hardware

Den: Use same fabric to recover den cushions. Jean is durable, contemporary and welcoming. Carry basket weave wall covering thru backdrop of trophy case.

Back Wall: Add detail to sailboats- colored sails & race numbers would bring them to life and redo masts with ½ rounds.

Bar/Buffet: Added onto backside of concessions divider (13’) useful for staging wine/beer tastings, ladies’ lunches, etc. Bar stools will add other social interaction.

Exterior: Paint to compliment the new bathroom mural- a blue would work.

Decorating Committee: Perform majority of the work, others can add expertise and skill for various jobs. Members have various backgrounds & perspectives. Some involved in prior projects, most are anxious to get more involved.

Members: Jesse Kline Susan Marteney Terry Kline Susan & Bill Pollard Rich Oughterson Tracy Fitch & Joan Bozogian Susan & Lydia Marteney Greg Munno Louise Wilson Ellen Cotter Mary Rita Carnicelli

Budget: $1500 - $2000

OYC Boatlift Wait List

Click Here to See the Boat Lift Wait List

Boaters this year’s Waterfront has even more appeal. As you read you’ll find that it is due to many club volunteers. Thanks, for the north and south docks that were prepped and stained this May, goes to Bill and Will Bock, Steve Kraatz, and Debbie Moody. The Crane Crew coordinated again by Fred Hamberger and Steve Vincent and fueled by the generosity of Nick Coblio, who put in the floating dock and hoists. The team of Paul Barron, Marty Fefer, George Haux, Tony StPhillips, and Bob and Alice Hoatland who set up the racks and placed boats on clean up day. Gary Roberts prepped the new north dock ladder. Thanks to Dick and Donna Johnson for cleaning the south dock pipe covers. And also to Margaret Murray for making professional OYC decals for the waterfront.

Again this year the club offers a variety of boats most any member can enjoy. Reminder before you use any club boats please inform the lifeguard after signing the sign out book in the clubhouse. The two club Sunfish are in beautiful shape and ready for your enjoyment thanks to Tony StPhillips. Having two Sunfish allows members to chaperone with a beginning sailor or even race the buoys with a friend between Martin’s Point and club’s mooring markers. Gary Roberts and Howard Ford have the O’day daysailor in top shape to cruise the lake with two or three friends. Please plan ahead for help with launching or rigging the daysailor. Don’t forget we have two catamaran style Hobie 14’s that are ready to pull in the water thanks to Jim Kusche. The sails are in the plastic tubes under them. Again please call ahead if there is a need for assistance or take the club sailing lessons this end of June first of July.

Use the 2 yellow floats to hold your sailboat or kayak off the shore while you either trim up or down your boat by using the ties, loop or clip connected right underneath the float.

Parental supervision is required for all youth sailors!

Everyone will always wear a life jacket as the winds shift quickly on any lake. Extra life vests have been donated by club members and can be found in buoy’s room or under the main deck.

Please report any equipment problems, etc, to the steward or myself by phone, note or email. George Haux is reconditioning the club canoe’s paddles.

The popular paddleboat and white rowboat are located side by side next to the swim area and may only be used in the mooring area between the boating docks.

Remember a lot of time and money is spent preparing and maintaining the waterfront equipment. A broken oar? See the steward who will get another one already to go from the garage. Then call, email, etc, me to report it.

The other club boats are the two aluminum rowboats, fiberglass lifeguard, and the committee powerboat. The rowboats located by the north and south docks and are for use by those needing to get to their moored boats. They are to be used and returned to their spot for the next person to use both in add out. The lifeguards’ beige fiberglass rowboat, by the kayak rack, is required by law for lifeguard use only. The new committee powerboat is for club maintenance, emergencies, and the finally the racing program. It is not open for members’ use.

Boat Owners, trailer parking in the upper field starts back 100 feet from the club driveway. The first 100 feet will accommodate boats that are not able to get on moorings or lifts yet and keep the south parking lot (lakeside) open for those paying the trailering fee and member parking. Please use wooden blocks provided by the entrance of the field to secure your trailer. Do not use rocks, etc, which can chip or bend the mower blades. The parking area south of the steward’s cabin is reserved for those paying trailing fees only. Those boats waiting to be moored should be out of the parking lots after the first week of June. Delayed or need more time for: repairs, replacements, schedules, etc., move your boat to the upper field after the first week of June.

Please remember to take pride in our club by:

  • Leaving your picnic site cleaner than you found it.
  • Keeping the shoreline neat by picking it up litter
  • Draining rainwater regularly out of your shore boat-mosquito larva
  • Scrubbing off dirt and debris often from your shore boats
  • Thanking those who help or volunteer with beer, food, etc
  • Volunteer! See lists by the restaurant entrance or call me
  • Look for home items you could donate

    Inside The Buoys

    By Ellen Cotter

    Swimming Directors

The cottonwood is in the air, so Opening Day must not be far off, although the weather hasn’t really convinced me yet. Brigi has already jumped in the water a few times, so we know it’s good enough for the polar bears.      I’m hoping to have at least a couple of returning lifeguards, as well as some new faces. The guards all have Lifeguard, Waterfront, CPR/AED, and First Aid certifications, so they are on duty to assist members with any injuries received anywhere on the grounds. As in the past, the lifeguards will be manning the swimming area from noon until 9 p.m. from Opening Day until July 31st and from noon until 8 p.m. throughout August. Swimming lessons will be offered by one of the lifeguards for two weeks during the season as well; look for information and sign-up sheets in the Clubhouse.

Please keep in mind that our guards are on duty for our swimming safety. All our swimmers must heed the warnings of the guards and follow Club rules as they are posted. A few of the most important reminders that bear repeating every year: (1) Parents must accompany children under 12 years of age to the swimming area. (2) There also is no diving allowed from the dock or the trampoline raft. The water is too shallow for safe diving. (3) Water shoes are a necessity if one is planning on standing anywhere in the water. (4) There are only four swimmers allowed on the trampoline raft and only two people are to be bouncing at one time. Swimmers are not allowed to jump off either raft from the side farthest from the lifeguard chair; they’re not able to see swimmers in the water on that side. (5) Swimming is not allowed when a lifeguard is not on duty.

Is your picnic basket stocked? Can you locate that pair of watershoes? Is your summer reading list complete? Have you got that boat battery charged and are all your lines in good order? I suggest you get crackin’, ‘cause summertime is almost here.

    Sailing

    Jim Kusche

    Sailing Directors

The season has started and the water is warming up fast. We are getting off to a slow start as usual with weather of both extremes and a few stragglers waiting for warmer water I guess. The schedule is again Sunday mornings and Weds. evenings for a Fun Series. The on water starts are 10:00 for Sundays and at 6:15 on Weds.

A sailing meeting was held May 14 to get everyone together to plan the summer. The biggest change was Sunday scoring. Based upon the updated trophies (Flying Scot and Multihull) we will have 3 trophy classes. The third class is Big Boat. It would be painless to add a Laser class which already has a very nice stained glass trophy that has not bee awarded in many years…..hint! Wednesday nights will be a combined Portsmouth handicap scoring as we have always done.

Sailing lessons will be instructed by Bob Sloan this year with help from as many of the members as are willing. Dates are Mon-Thurs for the 2 weeks starting Jun 30. Classes are 10-3 with an hour break for lunch around noon. If there is enough interest evening class may be setup for adults. Bob can be reached at 253-6175. These were a very big hit last year and I sure Bob’s continued direction will make it again this year.

The big news is we have a new committee boat that should last us for years. I thank Rich’s friend John for delivering the boat to Binghamton and Bob Sloan for bringing it the rest of the way.

Keep an eye on the sailing page and bulletin board for updates.

    See you on the water.

    The Galley & Ship’s Store

    By Mary Rita Carnicelli

    Kitchen Director

    Galley

The club house has gone through an uplifting transformation. Jesse Kline used her professional creative talent to carry out a plan to give the clubhouse a new look. Her committee and volunteers put a great deal of effort into this project. The new color scheme, paint , and cushion covers on the chairs in the fireplace area contribute to the plan. We are investigating various possibilities to improve the flooring. Ladies Day Luncheons are on Wednesdays and are a popular event. Many find card games a favorite form of entertainment while others prefer to visit with mambers and guests. Kendra will have a weekly menu posted, and reservations should be made by sign up sheet or phone. We hope you will enjoy this season at OYC.

    Home Port

    By Al Kalicki

    Buildings Director

Picture not yet available      Our Club's buildings are in good shape. Because of budget constrains some of the major projects are on hold (ex: New concrete canopy around the club house). There are however many small items to take care of that will fill the rest of my summer. You might see me painting, raparing the garage or replacing door screens.

         See you on the water!
