WINDWARD
| Volume 78, Issue 2 | Internet Edition | June 2004 |
After this cool wet spring I'm looking forward to a warm sunny summer at the club! Kris and Adele have a some great events planned, so please help them out by making your reservations as early as possible.
Thanks to all the members that helped on clean-up day, many hands make short work. Thanks again!
We have a few new members so please introduce yourself to them and make them feel welcomed. As always if you have any suggestions or concerns please fell free to contact any board member. Let's all work together to make the summer as enjoyable as can be.
See you soon at opening weekend

As of this writing (Monday, May 31, 2004) there are 29 members who still need to pay their dues with 4 whom we have not heard a word from since last year. To those four, if you do not intend to renew your membership please send me an e-mail at richk2@adelphia.net or call 252-6101. My second comment about payments goes to those 9 members who rounded off when they wrote their checks. (It may be the result of dividing the dues into two payments.) For those who rounded up the Club thanks you (anything up to a dollar I consider as other income, over a dollar I carry forward as a credit). For those who rounded down (the greater number) be prepared to pay when you pick up your chit or the amount will be deducted from the chit.
Speaking of chits. It costs too much to send out chits and “Yearbooks”. They will be available at the opening party or from the kitchen. Remember, the chits are like money and if lost they cannot be replaced. It is suggested that you leave your chit with Liz at the kitchen.
In the last WINDWARD there was an article about a new bond issue to cover the cost of the new roof and other work that we thought would be needed. As it stands right now, the gabion problem by the mole has at least been temporarily fixed putting off an expensive repair (estimates were as high as $18,000) and the culvert problem on the south end has been fixed for less than $100. We will be looking at ways to reduce the possibility of the culvert from getting plugged in the future. The original bonds have been called and the new issue is at 5% for ten years. A few bondholders requested their money back so that has increased the need for about $25,000 in new money. If you are interested in a bond from between $1,000 to $5,000 please contact me. We originally said that each member family would be limited to $5,000 but if the interest is not what we anticipated we will raise the maximum per member family.
The Club WILL NOT offer gas for sale any longer. Our insurance will not cover any liability for the storage of gas on the property or for any spill that may occur. The liability is just too great and the Board made the decision to get out of the gas business. Sorry.
Peter Whiting has spearheaded the assessment issue. The Club hired Greg Doan to appraise our property and he has arrived at a figure of $590,000, a good ways from the $905,000 figure that the Town assessed us at. The Owasco Assessment Review Board will hear our grievance on June 9. The cost of the appraisal was $1,000. Peter has also talked to an attorney about taking our issue to court (our only recourse as a corporation) if the board fails to grant us any relief. We will keep you posted.

Boaters welcome to the 2004 season! Please make safety your number one priority. There are some new changes in safety equipment #1 is that flares need to be replaced every 3 years so check your flares dates –none? – then get new ones that are. Be sure the whistle or air horn is usable and that you now need life jackets and in addition one seat throw type too. Also is your emergency flag a fluorescent orange and at least one square foot and don’t forget the oar. An open bowed boat’s front seating is only for when the boat is stopped, it’s illegal to ride up front. Speed limit within 100 foot of shore, a dock, or anchored boat is 5 mph. Everyone under 11 years old is required to wear life jackets. Be sure your boat registration and insurance are up to date and you keep part of the registration with you when boating.
I ask that boaters take pride in your boats and equipment by keeping them named and ship shape: moored boats need a scrubbing / car wash every 2-3 weeks, soaking your covers in the lake for a couple of hours and then brushing them off works as well as a trip home for a hosing. Shoreline lasers and others please drain and rinse boats often to keep mosquito larva from making a home. It is up to owners to regularly inspect their mooring chains and hoists. Please keep the shore area neat, take time to add drifted in trash to your bag headed to the garbage bin. Have a safe and enjoyable season.
Questions please call Ralph at 253-2935
