From The Helm

By Peter Whiting

Commodore

Welcome to the 2008 season of the Owasco Yacht Club. First, I would like to welcome two new board members. Mary Rita Carnicelli who will be heading the kitchen and Jesse Kline scheduling the soical events. Their e-mail links are on the web page or you can approach them with any suggestions or concerns that you may have. I would also like to thank departing board members Val McKenzie and Kris Belz for their time and dedication they have given the past few years.

New projects on the list year will include finishing the paving on the roads, club house renovations and a new/used committee boat. We will also need to do something with the wall north of mole in very near future.      The board has had one member voice concerns about the increase in the kitchen chit for this year. Please keep in mind that the kitchen is not a money making operation for any yacht or country club. There is a need to maintain a certain level of sales to make it economically viable. This is the first time the chit fee has been increased in the last 12 years I have been back with the club and far less than what a monthly fee would be for any other organization. Have a great summer.

See you on the Water,

Treasurer

This year I sent out 202 bills including 4 members who were on leave last year. To date, April 10, I have had a response from everyone except 25 members. The 4 members on leave last year are included in the number who have not responded. I have received 8 resignations and 3 leave requests. Assuming that the 4 leave request members from last year are not coming back our membership stands at 187. Please, folks, recruit a few new members. The budget is much easier to manage when the membership is around 200.

If you know someone who would like to join the Club please submit their name and family information to our secretary, Louise Wilson. Visit the web site for more information on how to sponsor a new member.

On the new member list from last fall are Carmen and Donna Zeolla, Daniel and Elizabeth Evans, and one reinstatement, Robert Haskel.

Remember, the balance of your dues is due by May 31. Please do not wait until May 31 to send them.

Remember, it is the responsibility of the treasurer to maintain an accurate membership list. PLEASE let me know if there have been any changes in your family (new additions or older children leaving the nest), your telephone number, or your email address. Also please let me know when you reach the age of 60 and qualify for a senior category membership. Please make changes before May 1 so that the Yearbook contains accurate information.

The fascia around the building was covered with aluminum last fall. The high water and wave action from the west has done more damage to the seawall north of the mole. Otherwise the Club appears to have come through the winter without any serious damage.

The water will be turned on just as soon as possible (hopefully by the middle of April). You will know the water is on when the bathroom doors are left unlocked. As always, if you see anything amiss around the Club and you are unable to take care of the problem please let one of the Board members know. We are looking forward having Joan Macholl back again this year as steward.

Think spring and it won’t be long and before we will be able to enjoy the best kept secret on Owasco Lake.

Lakeside Activities

By Jesse Kline and Joan Macholl

Social Director

We’ve planned a nice variety of entertainment for the summer, with many old favorites returning and a few new musicians that have never performed at the OYC before. For our club opening kick-off (June 21st) after the blessing of the boats and opening buffet, John Reilly and his band will be returning to share their country rock sounds.

On July 5th for the holiday weekend we are trying something new per suggestion at the annual meeting in the fall. Interested members can bring a dish to pass (serving 6-8), after which the Auburn band Teenager will be performing their original rock-n-roll tunes.

Our first brunch is set for July 13th with special guest renowned jazz performer Bernard Sweetney. A relation of Adele Keegan, who is from out of the area, Bernard will be accompanied by local musician Peter Mack on stand-up bass.

July 26th the kitchen will host a fajita buffet followed by a performance by Alibi. This is also the night to break out your “crazy hats!” Kid’s Day is set for Saturday August 2nd and August 9th in honor of Great Race weekend, there will be a pasta dinner and the Remnants will return with their Beatles favorites and more.

The second brunch on August 17th is marked by the popular return of Joe Whiting & Loren Barringer. Per Jim’s request, we bumped up Bye’s Beer Blast to August 23rd, as tradition; please bring a 6-pack of unique beer and a dish to pass. After the blast, the Rounders will return with their spirited jam band sound.

Post season, on September 20th Kendra will host a gourmet dinner, and members can bring their libation of choice to share- or not! During dinner 2nd Wind will perform to add a bit more atmosphere to the event.

Most all of the Saturday evening entertainment will run from 7 - 10PM, with the exception of the Great Race event which is scheduled a bit earlier to accommodate those that actually compete! Sunday brunches are running 11AM – 12:30PM with entertainment from 11:30AM - 2PM. As usual, look out for the reminder postcards with more details.

We’re looking forward to a great season, and we hope to see you all at these events!

Grounds

By Tom Graber

Grounds Director

Because of all the negative energy created in our economy, there has never been a better time to be a member of the OYC. With gasoline approaching $4.00/ gallon, and sailboats getting more than 500 miles/ gallon, what better situation could you ask for? Also, if the cost of traveling encourages you to vacation closer to home, just take the short drive to Firelane 2.

For this year, you will see new grills replacing the old ones. We have added a few more in new locations for everyone's convienience. Last year, we tried to complete more paving of our roadway system, but scheduling and weather discouraged our attempt. Hopefully, we can get this completed early enough in the spring to avoid any disruption of our activities.

With the anticipation of spring and summer comes the even more anticipated spring clean-up. The date(s) are Sat. May 17th. and Sun. May 18th. as a rain date. Please do everything you can to help get the place "ship shape". As I have always said, the club's greatest asset is the people who make it great. Enjoy your summer.

Inside The Buoys

By Ellen Cotter

Swimming Directors

The snowdrops have popped their little white heads out of the ground, and the daffodils are pushing the now-frozen mulch up like a tabletop. The ice is gone from the surface of the lake, but I know there’s a lot to do before even the hardiest of us can stand to put a toe in the water.

I will be lining up lifeguards for summer duty very soon. I never really know which lifeguards might return until I contact them in late April/early May, but I think I can say with some confidence that there will be two or three new guards this year. If you or someone you know is interested in lifeguarding at the best yacht club in Central New York, please either email (smellencotter@yahoo.com) or call (255-0045) with a request for an application. Lifeguards must be current on all of the certifications (First Aid, CPR/AED, Waterfront Lifeguarding) through Labor Day.

Hope to see you at Spring Clean-Up Day! Bring a rake!

Sailing

The big news is we are in need of a new (or should I say different) committee boat. The old one has served us well but has taken on enough water weight in the hull to make it unsalvageable for setting marks. We are seriously looking for a console 16-19 ft model suitable for carrying marks. If anyone has a lead on one please let Steve or I know as soon as possible.

Sailing is only a month or so away by the time you read this. I’m going to get mine ready before the lawn needs mowing. There IS a purpose to mud season! I plan to get a sailor meeting together in May as we usually do to get the schedule and any ideas you have pinned down. Bring your ideas for fun events. We have a few new boats and it would be nice to carry on the renewed energy the sailing lessons generated last year.
