From The Helm

Commodore

Greetings all and here's hoping we will have an early warm, sunny, summer.

I must give our thanks for the delicious meals, theme buffets, and special orders that Liz Dello provided for our Club members these last few years. We are happy that she will be a regular member, enjoying someone else's cooking and having the freedom to relax this summer. Well deserved, I must say!!

We are fortunate to have, KENDRA, of KENDRA'S CATERING, to take over our kitchen operation. We give a warm welcome to Kendra and look forward to her meals and creativity. Watch for the kitchen's opening and the special events Kendra, Val and our Social Committee, under director, Kris, have planned for this coming season.

WE are happy to welcome, the MACHOLL family as our Stewards. We are getting the bunkhouse in "shipshape" for the Macholl kiddos, and the cottage up to par. Joanie will be looking for odds and ends that Club members might have around to make the cottage Macholl homey.

Your Board did not hibernate over the winter. We have had monthly meetings with me on conference call in Florida. We have ordered new Club House windows and doors all around. We have obtained a kitchen establishment, found Stewards, and kept up a website and the WINDWARD. We have walked Club grounds as weather permitted, to look for trouble spots, and discouraged litterers and trespassers. We have obtained estimates for repairs, windows, doors, and new building projects such as Kayak racks etc. We are ready to go as soon as the weather breaks. Give a "THANK YOU" shout out to a Board member when you see them. They work very hard and it's all volunteer!!! If you can help out in anyway give a call to Rich Knaul, Tom Graber, or Ron Bachta...or send me an e-mail.

Let us know if you are interested in being on the Board. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Hope to see you all soon. Please watch for "Clean-up" day...a great day to take some ownership of your Club.

As ever, Adele

Treasurer

As of today, April 1, 79 % of our members responded either with full or partial payments, a letter of resignation or a request for a leave of absence. I sent out 197 bills in February. So far we have had 5 resignations, two people have asked for a leave of absence for the year and we have gained one new member - Jeff and Lisa Brady and their 3 children, Camille, Nolan and Juliette. We are waiting to hear from another five possible new members. I experienced some computer and internet problems and was unable to send out reminders until after March 31. Sorry for the inconvenience and I will not penalize anyone until April 15 for late payments. Remember, the balance of your dues is due by May 31. Please do not wait until May 31 to send them.

If you know someone who would like to join the Club please submit their name and family information to and our secretary, Theresa Mason. Our membership stands at 190 so we have room for at least ten new members.

Remember, it the responsibility of the treasurer to maintain an accurate membership list. PLEASE let me know if there have been any changes in your family, your telephone number, or your email address. Also please let me know when you reach the age of 60 and qualify for a senior category membership. Please make changes by May 1 so that the Yearbook contains accurate information.

The Board has been hard at work planning for the new season. We will be getting new windows and screens in the clubhouse along with a lighting upgrade. The outside doors to the restrooms will be replaced and the door on the north side of the clubhouse will be repaired. Ken and Joan Macholl along with Christina, Jimmy and Catherine will be the stewards this summer. We will be fixing up the bunkhouse so that they will have a little more room.

For those of you who have not heard, we settled our dispute with the Town of Owasco over our assessment. The original figure was $908,600 and we ended up at $793, 675 giving us a reduction in our tax bill of around $4300 for the next three years or until reassessed again. The refund received for last year was put into the capital fund.

Ralph Estrich has asked me to review boat fees because of some miss understandings. The crane service that we use has raised the fee considerably to $800 for placing the hoists and $800 for removing them. They charged the Club $200 for taking the floating docks out and will charge us $200 to put them back in. Hoist owners are NOT paying the additional charge for moving the floating docks. Last year we changed our fees, except moorings, for all boat storage to $20/foot of width based on the wider of the skid/trailer or boat. The rationale of the $20 per foot of width was the high value of shoreline based on the assessors $1500 per foot. If you have any questions please feel free to call Ralph of me.

It’s Time!!!

We all know what this first newsletter means…summer is on its way, finally! Of course it does not look like it outside, as I write this note it is beginning to snow!! I hope that when you receive it the sun is shining. We have a great variety of entertainment scheduled for this season, including some old favorites as well as some new (to us) bands. I believe we have succeeded in providing something for everyone.

Our SOFT OPENING is on June 17th. We will be having the “Blessing of the Boats” and the kitchen will be open. Our OFFICIAL OPENING will be on June 24th. Capt’n Squeeze and the Zydeco Moshers will be performing for us from 7-10. We would love to hear some comments throughout the season, so please let us know what you liked and what you didn’t like. This will help with future planning.

OYC Boatlift Wait List

Click Here to See the Boat Lift Wait List

Please call or email me to assist for these Waterfront Jobs: putting in the hoists, north dock and mole maintenance, putting in part of the south dock, dropping the 3 new mooring buoys, putting in the new swim dock, and or on clean up day when the club boats need to be cleaned and brought down to the shore, rest of the south dock goes out, shoreline cleaned for small boat skids, swim dock goes out.

The club requires that all members’ boats at the club or from home using the facilities be identified with the club sticker- a good safety feature for owners. Until you get the stickers provide your own visible identification. Your trailers, lifts, buoys and skids need to be clearly identified also in case of an emergency. Contact me with the boat and trailer registration information. Boat placement is at the waterfront director’s approval. The club has waiting lists for hoist, shore, and mooring spaces. New requests please send a dated letter or email me at e-mail link below.

The club provides rowboats at the north and south docks for access to member’s moored boats. Take it easy rowing! Row shallow! And, have the courtesy to call and tell me if you break an oar or an oarlock. Spare oars are in the rafters of the clubhouse deck and some ready to use in the garage- contact the Steward. Call or email me so I can begin the process of replacing it.

Remember the oars and rowboat at the swim area are for lifeguard use only, during the swim season.

This year empty boat trailer parking in the upper field starts back 70 feet from the club driveway. This will accommodate boats that are not able to get on moorings or lifts and keep the south parking lot open for member parking. Please use wooden blocks provided by the entrance of the field to secure your trailer. Do not use rocks, etc, which can chip or bend the mower blades. The parking area south of the steward’s cabin is reserved for those paying trailing fees only, starting June 1st. Those whose boats are waiting to be moored have till May 31st to get wet, but should you need more time for: repairs, replacements, schedules, etc., put your boat in the front of the upper field.

Remember you are required to carry your own insurance, the club assumes no liability for loss or damage even if you are using club boats. Please check your homeowner or boat policy for your liability coverage. It is up to members to inspect their boats, moorings, and lifts, and to have their trailers inspected. Members are responsible for damage caused by nature or themselves and their property to any club property or other members and their property. They are to report any damage to the owner (see stickers), steward, and finally the waterfront director. Do the Right Thing!

Inside The Buoys

By Janie Darovskikh and Ellen Cotter

Swimming Directors

As the mini-glaciers in our yard recede and the robins peck about for a wiggling worm, I feel the urge to be near the lake getting stronger. We count down the days to the end of the school year in our house and daydream about picnics and sailing and smoothies and spontaneous games of “Stick.”

The lengthening days also remind me that I must get on with hiring lifeguards for the season. So here is my plea: If you or someone you know is interested in lifeguarding at the best sailing club in Central New York, please either email (smellencotter@yahoo.com) or call (255-0045) with a request for an application. Lifeguards must be current on all of the certifications (First Aid, CPR, Waterfront Lifeguarding) before the season begins.

I am open to considering any ideas people might have regarding the swimming area (short of ever closing it) so please feel free to contact me via email or phone or stop me at the Club this summer. I can almost hear the lapping of the waves and the screeching of the gulls from here. Hope to see you at Spring Clean-Up Day!

The Galley & Ship’s Store

By Valerie McKenzie

Kitchen Director

Galley

A new season of good eating and good friends is just around the corner. We are so excited about the new management of our kitchen. Kendra Hart, of Kendra's Culinary Creations, Moravia will be our new kitchen manager and "food designer." Kendra has a wonderful reputation in the area. She has catered some of the largest events in our area. She does the most wonderful wraps and anything "baked" is her specialty. We are thrilled to have her aboard. We will be looking for your comments and suggestions for this year.

Ships Store

Once again this year we will have all your outer wear needs with the OYC logo. We have T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and hats. We can order anything you would like with the club logo on it. Please let us know what you are interested in for the coming year. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in June and don't forget cleanup day this spring. See you soon.

Home Port

By Ron Bachta

Buildings Director

It's currently snowing as I put some thoughts together concerning what the board is working on for building improvements for this year.

Because this year's steward and her family intend to occupy both the steward's house and bunkhouse, both buildings will need to be brought up to livable conditions. Generally the following will need to be done: replace roofing shingles, replace rotted lumber on porch and stairs, install vinyl flooring in kitchen, interior painting and replace window treatments.

Price quotes have been received for replacing the clubhouse windows and exterior doors as well as exterior doors to the bathouse. The board is reviewing the quotes and intends to move forward in these areas.

The board is also looking into improving the quality of lighting and air movement in the clubhouse by installing new lighting fixtures, ceiling fans and exhaust fan.

These are the main projects, but there are numerous smaller tasks in need of attention that seem to come to light as the active club season begins.

All projects are in need of helpers. Individuals like you who have the do it yourself skills in electrical, carpentry, roofing or painting. Give me a call and let me know. WE can use a little of your time and expertise. See you at the club soon.
