From The Helm

By Adele Keegan

Commodore

Hello members from Delaware where I am caring for my daughter,Erin and Granddaughter, Lydia. We thank you for your prayers, notes, cards and for Lydia’s stickers.

I am happy to know that our new swim dock will be ready for opening day. Many thanks to Peter Whiting for stepping up for me in my absence.

Rich and Peter have been busy looking out for us with the assessment issue and the whole Board has been hard at work all winter. Val is working with Liz on our everyday menus and also those special events that Kris is planning. Gary and Tony are busy with sailing schedules and maybe some special treats for sailors and sailor "wannabees". Dear patient Hobie is working so very hard on our Homepage and trying to get "wayward" Board members (self included) to get their articles to the WINDWARD. Ralph and Peter are getting the waterfront under control after winter damage,(check web pics. UGH!) and Tom Graber has plans for playground improvements, and possibly some plans for fencing and walkway in Locker room ,Clubhouse graveled area. Ron Bachta is looking to improve windows and doors where needed. Ellen and Janie are busy with lifeguard interviews and all the other things that make our swim area so delightful. Work is also being done to dress up our yearbook.

I am happy to welcome to our Board, Pam Kirkwood(Commodore Elect), Tom Graber(Grounds),and Ron Bachta (Buildings). Also, we have Tony St Phillips assisting Gary, Pete Whiting assisting Ralph and Niki Wright assisting Rich. As you can see this Board has a great deal of talent and enthusiasm. Things can not be accomplished with Board members alone. Please let them know that you are available to help with any project. YOUR help is essential to a successful season. PLEASE be there for CLEAN-UP DAY.

I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to past Commodore Bob Sloan. He, in his quiet, unassuming manner has made vast improvements to our Club. New locker rooms, showers, docking and other things that are not as obvious. THANK YOU ROBERT!!!

I hope you will take time this summer to help out and enjoy the Club MORE than you ever have. Your lawns, laundry, overtime at work will always be there. Take time to count your blessings...one of them should be OYC.

Know that I feel your support.

As ever, Adele

Purser’s Office

By Rich Knaul

Treasurer

Congratulations Club Members, this has been the best year yet for meeting the March 31 deadline for dues. As of today, April 11, there are only 15 members who we have not heard from out of the original 205 bills that were sent out in January. If there is any one of the fifteen members who is not going to renew his/her membership please let us know, it is critical to the budget process. You can email me at richk2@adelphia.net or phone 315-252-6101. The balance of dues is due by May 31 to avoid late payment charges. As I said in the original mailing, you can pay your dues in installments provided you meet the March 31 and May 31 deadlines. As of today there have been 16 resignations and only two new memberships. Our two new members are Richard (Buck) & Joan Jones and Bob & Alice Hoatland. If you know of anyone who might be interested in becoming a member please let us know.

The assessment issue is at a standstill at the present time. We have done some negotiating with the Town but have not made a final decision pending the outcome of the suit the Owasco News group has against the Town. We will keep you posted.

Preliminary budgets are in place for this summer. I would like to remind everyone that the Club is your summer home away from home and we ask that you treat it as you do your own home. Please pitch in to help with the spring cleanup, dock and hoist placement. Please report any problems that you may come across to the steward when he is on the premises or give any one of the board members a call or email. The Board has approved the expenditure of $12,000 for a new swim dock. It is made of aluminum so should be easier to put in and out. I am sure Ellen and Janie will have more to say about the dock.

It has been a long winter so let’s hope that summer will be soon in coming and we can enjoy the best-kept secret on Owasco Lake.

Please call or email me to assist for these Waterfront Jobs: putting in the hoists, north dock and mole maintenance, putting in part of the south dock, dropping the 3 new mooring buoys, putting in the new swim dock, and or on clean up day when the club boats need to be cleaned and brought down to the shore, rest of the south dock goes out, shoreline cleaned for small boat skids, swim dock goes out.

The club requires that all members’ boats at the club or from home using the facilities be identified with the club sticker- a good safety feature for owners. Until you get the stickers provide your own visible identification. Your trailers, lifts, buoys and skids need to be clearly identified also in case of an emergency. Contact me with the boat and trailer registration information. Boat placement is at the waterfront director’s approval. The club has waiting lists for hoist, shore, and mooring spaces. New requests please send a dated letter or email me at restrich@adelphia.net

The club provides rowboats at the north and south docks for access to member’s moored boats. Take it easy rowing! Row shallow! And, have the courtesy to call and tell me if you break an oar or an oarlock. Members broke 2 oars and 3 oarlocks. For these five repairs, only one person called to let me know he had broken something. Call me or email me so I can begin the process of replacing it.

There is a spare oar hiding in the rafters under the clubhouse deck and I have replacement oars of different lengths ready to be used in the garage. Contact the steward or a board member on premises. Remember the oars and rowboat at the swim area are for lifeguard use only, during the swim season.

This year empty boat trailer parking in the upper field starts back 70 feet from the club driveway. This will accommodate boats that are not able to get on moorings or lifts and keep the south parking lot open for member parking. Please use wooden blocks provided by the entrance of the field to secure your trailer. Do not use rocks, etc, which can chip or bend the mower blades. The parking area south of the steward’s cabin is reserved for those paying trailing fees only. Those whose boats are waiting to be moored have till May 31st. Should you need more time for: repairs, replacements, schedules, etc., put your boat in the upper field.

Remember you are required to carry your own insurance, the club assumes no liability for loss or damage even if you are using club boats. Please check your homeowner or boat policy for your liability coverage. It is up to members to inspect their boats, moorings, and lifts, and to have their trailers inspected. Members are responsible for damage caused by nature or themselves and their property to any club property or other members and their property. They are to report any damage to the owner (see stickers), steward, and finally the waterfront director. Do the Right Thing!

Grounds

By Tom Graber

Grounds Director

Now that the glaciers of winter have retreated, we find (as usual), that the winter was not kind to our grounds. I am encouraging everyone to help bring the club back in ship shape during our annual spring clean-up day, Saturday,May 14th, from 9:00 until ?. Our rain date is Sunday May 15th. Tasks include: table moving, dock installation, cleaning, and yes, our favorite job--- the leaves. If you can not attend on these days, but can spend a few hours prior to or after, please feel free. Every bit of effort helps. Food and beverages will be provided.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call me: Tom Graber 255-3662 or

Inside The Buoys

By Janie Darovskikh and Ellen Cotter

Swimming Directors

The crocuses are in bloom and the juncos are flocking to the feeders; that means summer is close enough to almost feel on your cheeks. For those of us who spend the better share of our Yacht Clubbing time in the swimming area, great news: the Club has purchased a new swim dock! Not just a few new boards or the old dock in a new spot, but a new, wider, aluminum-deck, sturdy-truss dock made by Hewitt. (You can view a picture of the dock style on the OYC website or try www.hewitt-roll-a-dock.com). Each section is 6? wide (as opposed to approximately 3.5?), and the platform at the end will be a roomy 14? ? 12?. We plan to have a railing along the south edge of the dock as usual, so passing one another will be a breeze.

This purchase has been on the list for a couple of years and its time has come. We need to thank Peter Whiting for doing the research and the figuring. He needed to drag himself to the boat show at the fairgrounds, chat with dock dealers, get samples, and do some online surfing, all of which is the extra time and effort that counts. So when you’re dipping your toes in the lake from our new dock this season, remember to thank Peter.

One last thought: if you know any young certified lifeguards who might like to lifeguard at the best yacht club in Central New York, have them contact me at 255-0045 or smellencotter@yahoo.com. Allison Sloan will be returning as Head Lifeguard, but there still may be openings for our full-time, part-time, and substitute lifeguards.

See you at Clean-Up Day on May 14th!

SAILING FOR THE 2005 SUMMER

Sunday Races

Sunday races will start at 9 am this summer so we can take advantage of the early breezes on the lake.

The first Sunday of racing will start on Sunday, May 29, for those who are ready. Sunday races will be held every Sunday after that until Labor Day.

We will have the Colonel Peet long-distance race on the Sunday of the July 4th week-end and also a long-distance race on the Sunday of Labor Day week-end.

Wednesday Evening Races

Wednesday evening races will start at 6:15pm. They will be short courses, possibly just upwind-downwind legs, so we can get several races in.

The first Wednesday evening race will be on Wednesday, June 8.

If any club member is interested in trying out sailing or seeing what a race is like, you are very welcome to come around 6 pm and someone who is racing will be glad to welcome you aboard. Even if you have never sailed before, please feel free to come and we will be glad to help you participate.

Racing Classes There will be 3 racing classes this year.
1. One-designs like Flying Scots and Stars.
2. Multi-hulls like catamarans and trimarans.
3. Cruising class for any sailboat that does not fit in the above two classes.

Future Events

Starting on Sunday, June 19, the club is putting on a sailing seminar at 12:30 pm after the races in the morning. Snacks and refreshments will be available.

Anybody interested in learning how to sail or how to improve their sailing skills are invited. It will be a good time and, hopefully, a learning time.

Other sailing seminars are also being planned.

The club is also planning a poker run for powerboaters and sailors. If you are interested, or want more information, please contact myself or Hobie.

The club is very interested in promoting activities to involve as many members as we can in boating. Afterall, we are a yacht club. If any boater or non-boater has ideas or suggestions, please contact myself or Hobie or any other sailor at the club.

Have a great summer enjoying the club and the waters of our Owasco Lake.

Summer is just slowly coming around the corner, but we are already planning some exciting and tasty things for the summer schedule. Our “Soft Opening” will be June 18th with a limited menu. Opening Day will be June 25th with a buffet and Classic Rock ‘n Roll with Brian Carr. Liz has some wonderful ideas for new menu items. We are planning a clambake and several wine tastings. We are also hoping to have coffee, rolls, bagels etc available after the Sunday morning races for the racers and watchers. Hope to see you all soon.

The Ship's Store

We had a wonderful response to our new OYC line of clothing last year. We will have hats, T’s, sweatshirts, and hoodies in both children’s and adult sizes. We will have the line available at the soft opening and can order any special item you need. Keep us in mind for Mother and Father’s day gifts this year.

Please call or email with any ideas, suggestions or questions you may have. See you all soon.
